To Heidegger’s Essay: Artist Statement
After reading the excerpt from The Question Concerning Technology by
Martin Heidegger, I had to take some time to think a little deeper about the
message and what was trying to be said. I struggled a bit with the reading, but
I eventually came to what I think Heidegger was trying to convey. While he
seemed a little critical of technology and the pace of development that it was
reaching, Heidegger isn’t completely anti-technology. Technology seems to have
always had a state of omnipresence, but I think he was rather concerned with
how rapid technology is developing and what impact it has on interfering with
nature. In a way, I think that we have reached a point in time where we cannot
really slow down the development and progress of technology in the world. In
response, I created a video that shows a sort of ‘what if’ scenario. Technology isn’t perfect.
It has flaws and glitches. I made a video including glitch art; it shows a view
of a day in the life of a person, but everything is buggy and glitchy. It also
includes a bit of “timestream
displacement;” sometimes the video skips around to another time of the day.
This was done to refer back to how technology has developed so rapidly over
time that it may even mess with time itself. While this is a bit of an
exaggeration, and while I don’t really think technology will come to that
point, I wanted to show what may happen if technology become so intertwined
with people’s lives, and how a person’s life may become glitchy itself.
